I originally set up this blog to showcase the old Dope Rider comic strips I occasionally did for High Times from the mid-1970s through the mid-1980s. With High Times' 40th anniversary issue in 2014, I restarted the strip and have been doing my best to get one done for each issue. A few months after they appear in the magazine, I will archive them here. Note: all images are copyrighted by Paul Kirchner.

Reviews of "Awaiting the Collapse"
Some really nice reviews of Awaiting the Collapse, which includes all the vintage Dope Rider stories. I honestly think these reviewers explain my work better than I can myself. My process is this: I think and think and eventually an idea pops into my head and if it amuses me I put it down on the paper. However, I don't know where the ideas come from and I don't consider myself the best judge of what they may mean.

My Birthday
When you're a kid, you look forward to birthdays. They represent progress. Then, after you're 28 or so, you no longer look forward to them much, unless you plan to run for president at 35. Then you get into your 60s and think, "Hey, Medicare pretty soon. Sweet!" That was last year for me. Yesterday I turned 66--yay! Social Security! My first steady paycheck in 16 years!
What's next? I understand that when you turn 100 you can get a shout-out on the Today show and an autopen-signed letter from the president.
As a present, my daughter Toni did a portrait of me surrounded by the character I created. I've never rendered Doper Rider's sidekick Dilly this well.

Dope Rider, "Close Encounter"
If you're exceptionally observant, you might notice that the alien's name is spelled "MARTIN," with the letters turned at different angles. Martin as in the Looney Tunes character Martin the Martian. (Oops--a commenter just reminded me it's Marvin the Martian. My bad.)
